How effective is Oseltamivir against the flu?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been feeling under the weather lately, and someone suggested taking Oseltamivir (Oseltamivir Phosphate) for the flu. That is what the doctor gave him for the flu. Rexol (Acetaminophen) is an antiviral medication, and I was wondering if it helps treat the influenza A virus. Could you shed some light on how Oseltamivir works, its potential side effects, and whether it is effective against the flu? Also, considering my symptoms, Is it the right choice for me, or should I explore other options? I am a 38-year-old guy, and your advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing, and I understand your concern.

You should not be taking anti-viral medicine without a confirmative diagnosis. Do not take Oseltamivir (Oseltamivir Phosphate) tablets unless your flu diagnosis is confirmed. Because the medication is in a higher class (neuraminidase inhibitor) of antiviral therapy, it cannot be used for regular or symptomatic treatment. After the diagnosis is verified and all laboratory reports are finished, it can be utilized. It is suitable for flu treatment and works in cases of influenza, dengue, and other virus infections. It does not have side effects but cannot be used based on symptoms. That is why I suggest you do testing, and then we can use appropriate medicine accordingly. What symptoms do you have, and when you are experiencing these symptoms? Please let me know so I can prescribe your medicine accordingly.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
