Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 62-year-old man dealing with obesity, which started after I lost my spouse in my 40s. I turned to food for comfort, and over time, I gained weight, which has affected my health. I now have type 2 diabetes, knee osteoarthritis, and shortness of breath with moderate exertion. My doctor suggested bariatric surgery because of my basal metabolic index and health risks, but I am concerned about the recovery process due to my age and joint pain. Are there safer, less invasive options for me or support programs to help with both the emotional and physical aspects of my weight gain?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Losing a spouse can lead to emotional eating, and grief can contribute to long-term weight gain. Bariatric surgery is an option for significant weight loss, but due to concerns about recovery and joint pain, it is important to consider other approaches. A medically supervised weight loss program may be a safer, less invasive option, offering personalized care from doctors, dietitians, and therapists to address both the physical and emotional aspects of weight loss.
These programs often include meal planning, low-impact exercises like water aerobics or chair exercises, and support for healthier coping mechanisms to replace emotional eating. Newer weight-loss medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists (Semaglutide), can also aid weight loss and help control blood sugar, benefiting your diabetes. For emotional support, grief counseling or group therapy may offer strategies to cope with loss in healthier ways.
Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.
Thank you.
