What exercise regimens may be effective for my weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female. I seem to be obese and have difficulty reducing my weight. I have a few concerns and want to know about them.

What exercise regimens might be effective in losing weight? I would also like to know some meal plans that might help me to lose some weight. Are there specific foods or nutrients I should focus on and avoid? If I am unable to lose weight, can I consider taking anti-obesity medications along with diet control and exercise regimens to lose some weight?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com

I can understand your concern.

A combination of exercise, meal planning, and possibly medication can be beneficial for effective weight loss.

The exercises that can be beneficial are -

  • Cardio - Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking, jogging, or cycling. Alternatively, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise, like running or swimming, can be effective.

  • Strength training - Include strength training exercises two to three times a week. Focus on full-body workouts using weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups.

Incorporate HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts one to twice weekly. These involve short bursts of intense activity followed by rest periods, which can help burn more calories in less time.

The dietary changes that can help with obesity include

  • Focus on meals that include lean proteins (chicken, fish, tofu), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa), and plenty of vegetables.

  • Use smaller plates to help manage portion sizes and avoid overeating.

  • Choose snacks like fruits, nuts, and yogurt instead of high-calorie, low-nutrient options.

  • Foods high in fiber like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, can help you feel full longer.

  • Lean proteins help build muscle and can aid in weight loss.

  • Include sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil, which can support satiety and overall health.

  • Avoid sugary drinks as they add empty calories and can spike blood sugar levels.

  • Avoid foods that are high in refined sugars, saturated fats, and sodium can contribute to weight gain.

If lifestyle changes are not effective, consult about anti-obesity medications. These should be considered when your BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above, with obesity-related health conditions.

If lifestyle changes alone have not been sufficient to achieve significant weight loss, medications might be prescribed alongside diet and exercise.

Remember, the most effective strategy for achieving and maintaining weight loss is a combined approach of healthy eating, regular exercise, and, if needed, medical support.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
