Why does my husband’s left foot have itchy, bumpy skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

The top of my husband's left foot, where the hair grows, is itching. The overlying skin is hard and has bumps. It sometimes secretes water. It has been like that for two weeks. We are trying home remedies for itching, such as garlic and apple cider vinegar.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your description, this looks like nummular eczema, though another possibility is irritant contact dermatitis from new footwear.

To understand this better, I would like to know a few details:

  1. Is this the first time your child has had a rash like this?
  2. Has there been any history of eczema in the past?
  3. Is the rash only on the left foot, and is the right foot completely clear?

Meanwhile, please stop using garlic on the skin, as it can cause further irritation. Gently clean the affected area with warm salt water using a piece of gauze to help soothe it.

I suggest applying topical mid-potent steroids like Triamcinolone acetonide 0.1 % cream twice after cleaning the area for two weeks. Consult a specialist, talk with them, and take the medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
