Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My eight-year-old son has been vomiting and experiencing diarrhea for the past 24 hours. We suspect norovirus, as there was a recent outbreak at his school. He has been drinking small sips of water, but he still looks very weak and pale. At what point should I take him to the hospital? What are the warning signs of severe dehydration? I do not want to panic unnecessarily, but I also do not want to ignore a potentially dangerous situation. Additionally, is there anything specific I can give him to help him recover faster, or should we just wait it out?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand that you are worried about your son. Given the recent norovirus outbreak at his school and his symptoms, it is likely that he has a norovirus infection.
Signs of severe dehydration:
If any of these signs appear, please take your son to the emergency room immediately.
Management:
There is no specific treatment for norovirus, as it is a self-limiting infection. Recovery usually takes about a week, and management focuses on symptom relief.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
