How to effectively manage norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last weekend, my 26-year-old sister attended a wedding. Two days later, she developed severe vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Her doctor suspects norovirus and recommended hydration, but she is struggling to keep fluids down and feels extremely weak. Her symptoms have lasted over two days.

At what point should we seek hospital care? How can we prevent the rest of the family from getting sick? Are there any medications to help with nausea or diarrhea, or is it just a matter of waiting it out?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Signs of severe dehydration (Seek Emergency Care if Present)

  1. Lethargy or reduced activity.

  2. Pale, sunken eyes.

  3. Cold hands or feet.

  4. Rapid breathing and heart rate.

  5. Irritability, drowsiness, or confusion.

  6. Dark yellow urine or decreased urination.

  7. Reduced skin elasticity.

Confirming norovirus & investigations

A stool examination can confirm norovirus. Additional tests like a complete blood count (CBC) may help determine the cause if symptoms persist.

Treatment Plan

  1. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS): To prevent dehydration.

  2. Antibiotics/Antivirals: Only if bacterial or viral origin is confirmed.

Preventive Measures

  1. Hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water.

  2. Food Safety: Properly cook meat and vegetables; wash produce thoroughly.

  3. Disinfection: Due to norovirus’s highly contagious nature, proper cleaning is essential.

Steps for Effective Disinfection

  1. Initial Cleaning: Wear disposable gloves. Clean surfaces with soap and water before disinfecting.

  2. Use a Suitable Disinfectant: Use EPA-approved products that are effective against norovirus. Prepare a bleach solution (1/3 cup bleach per gallon of water

  3. Apply Disinfectant: Ensure surfaces remain wet for 5-10 minutes before wiping.

  4. Wipe Down & Dispose of Materials Properly: Use disposable paper towels or cloths. Dispose of gloves and used materials in a sealed trash bag.

  5. Launder Contaminated Fabrics: Wash bedding, towels, or clothing in hot water at 60 degrees Celsius. Use bleach if the fabric is safe.

  6. Handwashing: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after cleaning.
