Can cold temperature affect penis and cause numbness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I usually sleep with my penis through the underwear fly in case I get nocturnal erections, so that it has somewhere to go and does not bend. However, the other day I fell asleep for about an hour and woke up, and I think the fly hole around my penis may have been a bit tight.

It did not feel that tight, but I noticed that the skin on my penis was noticeably colder to the touch. There was no pain, discomfort, or numbness at all; the temperature was very cool to the touch instead of warm. Is there any chance at all that this caused damage?

I currently have on-and-off ED due to stress, so I cannot tell if it “works the same,” but I have not had any symptoms. But the coolness to the touch concerned me. Just want to know if it is at all possible that this happening for an hour can cause damage if there is no numbness or pain.

Kindly suggest.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The room I was sleeping in was very hot at the time, and the underwear fly hole was tight enough to the point that it compressed the penis at the sides, not too tight as I stated before, but I could feel it a bit when I woke up. The skin is not cold to the touch anymore, only when this happens.

Is it possible that the skin's circulatory system was compressed, which made it cold, but the internal circulation was unaffected and did no damage to erections? I have mild ED at the moment due to stress, so it is hard to say if it affected my erection.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Do not worry about it. It cannot damage circulation because it is not a very tight, ring-like, constricting structure. The coldness of the skin was not due to compression from the underwear fly hole. There is no need to stress about it. Taking stress will further aggravate the ED (erectile dysfunction) and create panic for you to think again about it.

  1. Do you see any skin bruises?
  2. Is there any pain on deep palpation at that point of the penis?

If the answer is no to these questions, then believe me to be free from this worry.

Kindly reply and follow up if you have any further queries about it.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
