How to ensure peaceful, uninterrupted sleep for a 2-month-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I nurse my 2-month-old baby to sleep, and as I put him down, he moves his head left to right several times and wakes up within five minutes. It looks as if something is irritating him. He sleeps hardly for 8 to 10 hours in the 24 hour period. His maximum sleep time is 30 minutes.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

1. Usually, baby needs to adjust themselves, as they have to change for day and night timing.

2. The second thing is they are usually very much affected by surrounding noise, whether the condition is cold or hot, wet clothing, and feeding patterns.

3. If feeding is inadequate, they will always be in a disturbed state.

4. Baby also gets affected by touch. If the baby is held by the mother, they love it.

5. There is no medication that can be tried.

6. I just want to reassure you it is a usual physiological process of adaptation to the outer world for the baby. Usually, it improves over a period of time.

7. Make sure the baby is passing adequate urine (5 to 6 times). Exclusively breastfeed for 2 to 3 hours.
