Does vitamin B12 deficiency cause nerve damage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a healthy 50-year-old female, and recently I have had a tingly sensation on the side of my nose. It is not constant. I am not experiencing these sensations anywhere else in my body, nor am I suffering weakness or pain. I have low vitamin B12 and am an iron-deficient anemic. I am also in perimenopause. When I looked up the symptoms, MS kept coming up. Is what I am feeling the first sign of MS?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

However, your symptoms do not suggest multiple sclerosis (MS), as they are very localized. As you suffer from low vitamin B12, it is possible that your symptoms are related to a small pinched nerve or a damaged one due to vitamin B12 deficiency. It is well known that vitamin B12 deficiency can damage nerves (neuropathy). As there are no other symptoms, I would exclude MS.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
