Is stem cell therapy helpful for neurogenic bladder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter, who is 22 years old, has a neurogenic bladder. Her height is 4'10", and her weight is 116 pounds. She is suffering from voiding dysfunction and constipation. She underwent surgery for a spinal lipoma when she was 45 days old. Her bladder was trabeculated, and she had grade 3 reflux.

Her right kidney is 3.4 x 1.8 inches, and her left is 3.7 x 1.6 inches. She had been on Nitrofurantoin 100 mg and Tolterodine tartrate 2 mg per day (bedtime) for six years and discontinued three months ago. Kindly advise on the appropriate treatment option and prognosis. I would like to know if stem cell therapy is useful. I have attached her reports for your reference.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

We are here to help you. I have reviewed her reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Yes, your daughter needs treatment. I need to know how she is doing without medicines.

How many times in the night does she pass urine?

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

She voids twice in the night. In the meantime, she does not wake up for urination. Her urologist advised her to discontinue prophylactic use of Nitrofurantoin so that she can go for an antibiotic when she requires it.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

After studying her issues, my advice would be to give her Tolterodine as suggested by your doctor. Continuing Nitrofurantoin would not be beneficial. Tolterodine can greatly help her during the process.

If you want to try stem cell therapy, you can consider it, although the results are variable and not consistently positive. However, when all other options have been exhausted, stem cell therapy can be considered.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
