This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 18 years old female, and my weight is about 160 pounds. I have bad nausea, vomiting, the urge to vomit, and stomach pain. Migraine and hot flashes with one-minute freezing. What is wrong?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are two possibilities-

1. It can be a sign of ongoing minor stroke as weakness is limited to the upper part of the body (localized). A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a stroke that lasts only a few minutes. It happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly blocked. Symptoms of a TIA are like other stroke symptoms but do not last as long. They happen suddenly and are usually off and on in nature.

I recommend you go for an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain stroke protocol to rule out the possibility of ischemia or mild hemorrhage.

2. You are suffering from gastroenteritis. I would initially suggest you go for a test called stool routine and microscopy. The presence of bacteria or protozoa in stool can be tested. Sometimes infestation by toxic bacteria destroys natural gut flora(good bacteria like lactobacillus) and can cause loose motion. Gastroenteritis usually presents symptoms like bloating, belching, loose stools vomiting, nausea, weakness, etc. However, not all symptoms need to be always present in every patient. So just because you are not feeling nausea and vomiting does not mean you don't have gastroenteritis.

  1. Take a probiotic daily for a few days, along with Metamucil 2 tablespoons before bed, to add bulk to stools.
  2. Take a good quality probiotic like Econorm three times a day for at least a week.
  3. Medications that can be discussed with your gastroenterologist are antidiarrhoeal medicines Loperamide 4 milligrams stat followed by 2 milligrams twice daily to control the symptoms of diarrhea.
  4. In case of stool routine and sensitivity are positive for bacteria or protozoa, therapy with Cefixime and Ornidazole could be taken for 7 days.

As of now, I would strongly recommend you visit the nearest emergency.

Thank you.
