Does food poisoning show symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and high body temperature?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife had nausea and vomiting in the morning, and four hours later, the temperature recorded was 37.3 degree Celsius axillary. Can this be due to food poisoning, stomach bug, or COVID-19 infection? Does she need to take any tests? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

In the history you have provided, there is no chance of having COVID-19 infection. Please answer the following questions:

  1. Is there any recent contact with COVID-19 patients?
  2. Any cough, headache, or runny nose?

I hope she is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Possibly it could be some stomach bug or infection. Body temperature is mildly raised, and one episode of vomiting till now. There is no need for any blood tests at present. There is nothing to worry about at this moment. Please watch for any further episodes of nausea, vomiting, loose stool, diarrhea, or any further increase in body temperature. If there is any further progression of symptoms in a few hours or if present symptoms do not subside, then get the blood test. I would suggest the following:

  1. Take tablet Paracetamol 650 mg twice daily for two days only if body temperature increases above 99 Fahrenheit. No need to take a tablet if there is a mild temperature rise.
  2. Take tablet Ondansetron 4 mg twice a day for nausea or vomiting.
  3. Take a liquid diet and maintain adequate hydration.
  4. Take rest.

Kindly revert for more queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

No, there has been no contact with patients affected by COVID-19. She does not have a cough, runny nose, or mild headache

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no history of contact with COVID-19 patients, and no general symptoms of COVID-19 infection rule out possible COVID-19 infection. Just take a liquid diet without too much aroma or flavor. After nausea subsides, she can resume a regular diet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
