Can Actifed and Otrivine nasal drops be used after bypass?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 60-year-old man. I have had a bypass operation 17 years back. I am on alpha and beta blockers. Is it possible to take Actifed and Otrivine nasal drops together?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would suggest it is better to space these out at least two hours apart. Give a gap of two hours before taking other after taking one. Pseudoephedrine and Oxymetazoline have common alpha agonist activity, can increase, give a surge in BP, especially if your BP already remains at the borderline. Another thing that I am concerned is, if you have underlying subclinical BPH, taking these two together can precipitate urinary retention and you will not be able to empty bladder.
