What causes nasal congestion despite using medication?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have chronic nasal congestion for a longer period, roughly ten years. I got a blood test done before six years. Flagged for pteronyssinus *26.64kU/L* Class V and farinae Mite *18.76kU/L* and doctor prescribed Zyrtec. At first I will get mild relief and it will not last more than an hour. Since then I have tried other OTC allergy medicine as well as multiple nasal sprays that do not work. I continue to have running nose without any relief of blocked nose. Is there some type of relief I can get which I have not tried earlier?

Hello TimThe test says you are allergic to the two species of house dust mites. While it's true that you need antiallergic medicines, haven't you been explained about sufficient precautions to avoid allergies ? Allergen avoidance is the first and foremost technique to get rid of allergies. You must understand that allergy is a genetic phenomenon and cannot be cured. But you can follow necessary precautions and keep the allergic episodes to a bare minimum. House dust mites are concentrated in curtains, carpets, soft toys, cushions, upholsteries and such stuff. They feed on dandruff and dead skin cells. You beddings should be washed in warm water after an hour of soaking them in 140 fahrenheit water. Do revert back to me if you need more allergy related advice and help. Would be happy to help you. With sufficient and meticulous care your allergic episodes can be reduced and keep to a minimum.
