Are Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum infections STDs?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have tested positive for Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum infections. However, I did not have any symptoms, and I was asymptomatic. I am currently taking Doxycap 100 mg (twice daily for a week) and Azithromycin 250 mg (4 tablets at once). My queries are, are Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum STDs? Does it spread through saliva and unprotected sex? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please answer the following questions. Do you have any recent history of unprotected sexual intercourse? Do you have a burning sensation during urination? Do you have an increased frequency of urination? Are you suffering from itchy genitals? Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response. I had sexual intercourse with penetration two months back. No burning sensation during urination. I have an increased frequency of urination that has always been that way. Sometimes, I have an itching sensation in the genital area, but that comes and goes. Could these STDs spread by kissing or contact with saliva and sharing food and beverages? Kindly help. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum infections are transferred through sexual contact and kissing. Therefore, I suggest you follow these measures. (Consult a specialist doctor, talk with them and take medications with their consent.) Take Tablet Doxycycline 100 mg twice daily after food for 14 days. Take Syrup Cital (Disodium Hydrogen Citrate) 3 ml twice daily for seven days. Maintain proper genital hygiene and wash genitals with cleansing lotion for sensitive skin or a gentle skin cleanser daily. Avoid scratching and rubbing the lesions. You can repeat the test after completing one dose of the above medications. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can I transmit the infection by sharing the saliva through kissing or sharing food and water? Will it not be transmitted during sexual acts without oral or genital contact?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There are chances of herpes infection.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

As Mycoplasma hominins and Ureaplasma urealyticum are STIs, can they be transmitted by kissing or sharing food without sexual activity?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There are less chances of transmission, however infection is possible through kissing. I hope this helps. Thank you.
