How to address a period delay after taking dydrogesterone?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been taking Dydrogesterone as prescribed by my doctor, starting on the 15th day of my cycle for 15 days. My period is now delayed, and when I took a beta-hCG pregnancy test this morning, the result was negative. I do not have any pregnancy symptoms. My periods are typically regular, and I am wondering if the delay could be due to taking Dydrogesterone, or if there is still a possibility that I might be pregnant.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Since you have been taking Dydrogesterone (a type of progesterone) as prescribed, this may be causing a delay in your period. Dydrogesterone is often used to regulate the menstrual cycle and can sometimes result in a delayed period as it supports hormone levels.

What might be happening:

Effect of Dydrogesterone: Dydrogesterone mimics the progesterone your body naturally produces after ovulation. The withdrawal of the medication can trigger your period, but sometimes this process takes a little longer. This delay could simply be a result of the medication.

Beta hCG test: The negative result from your beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test suggests that pregnancy is unlikely, especially since you are not experiencing any pregnancy symptoms. However, if your period does not arrive in the next few days, it may be worth retesting or consulting your doctor for further evaluation.

Chance of conceiving: While it is still possible to conceive while taking Dydrogesterone, it is unlikely if you have been following the prescribed regimen. However, if conception occurred just before you started the medication, it might cause a delayed test result.

Recommendations:

  1. Wait a few more days: Since your periods are typically regular, the delay may just be due to Duphaston. Give it some more time to see if your period starts.

  2. Monitor symptoms: If your period does not come in the next few days or if you experience any unusual symptoms, consider repeating the pregnancy test or consulting your doctor for further advice.

If you are still uncertain or concerned, it is always best to follow up with your healthcare provider for additional guidance or tests.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
