Is it abnormal for a 21-year-old female to notice a milky discharge from her breast during her periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 21 years old, and today evening I noticed some milky discharge from my nipples when my breast was pressed. I am on my period, knowing I cannot be pregnant. And this time, I got my period a little early. Kindly tell me, is it something serious?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The milky water discharge from the breast is called galactorrhea. When it comes to nonpregnant girls or women, the most common cause is a high level of prolactin hormone, which is responsible for milk production after pregnancy.

Other causes are stress, too much stimulation of the nipple, and some medicines. However, sometimes there may be no cause for it, which is idiopathic. So in your case, I suggest you check your serum prolactin level as soon as possible.

I hope this has helped you out.

Kindly follow up with the reports.
