Can Mifepristone cause changes in the menstrual cycle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After using the Mifepristone my period lasted only two days. The following month, my next period started four days later than usual, but this time, the bleeding lasted only three days. The bleeding has now stopped. Should I be concerned about this change?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

After using Mifepristone and Misoprostol (for medical abortion), it is common for your menstrual cycle to be irregular for a while. Lighter, shorter, or delayed periods can occur as your body adjusts hormonally, and it may take a few months for your cycle to return to normal. The fact that your period came four days later and only lasted two to three days is not unusual.

Keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms like severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or foul-smelling discharge, as these could indicate an infection or incomplete abortion. If you feel fine otherwise, this short period is likely part of your body’s recovery.

If your periods continue to be irregular or you have concerns, it is best to consult a gynecologist. You may also want to discuss birth control options to prevent unintended pregnancies and avoid repeated use of medical abortion.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Regards.
