Can taking methotrexate affect conception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 40-year-old, and I have been struggling with joint stiffness and swelling, especially in my hands and knees. My doctor put me on Methotrexate, but I am worried about how this will affect me long-term. Will the medication help slow the progression of my rheumatoid arthritis, or will I still experience more joint damage as I get older? What can I expect in terms of my prognosis, and how can I manage my symptoms? Will this affect my sex life, I have one kid and we are planning for another kid. Can I get pregnant with this condition if yes, will this affect my baby?

Kindly help

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Methotrexate is one of the main treatments for RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and is quite effective at slowing down the progression of the disease and managing symptoms like joint stiffness and swelling. RA is a chronic condition where the immune system attacks the joints, leading to inflammation, pain, and, if untreated, joint damage over time. Methotrexate works by reducing this immune response, helping to protect your joints from further damage.

Must follow up with your rheumatologist for regular monitoring, and report any side effects.

  1. Many patients with RA can maintain a good quality of life.

  2. Physical therapy.

  3. Regular exercise.

  4. Help keep your joints flexible and muscles strong.

  5. A balanced diet can also help reduce symptoms.

Methotrexate is not safe during pregnancy because it can affect fetal development. Your doctor can guide you with alternative medications during this time to manage your RA while reducing risks to the baby. Joint pain and stiffness can sometimes make certain sexual activities uncomfortable, especially if RA is active. Finding comfortable positions and ensuring open communication with your partner can help

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
