What are the complications of metabolic surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had metabolic surgery 8 months ago for obesity and type 2 diabetes, and now I’m losing weight too fast and getting dizzy often. My sugar levels are still fluctuating, and I feel weak after eating. Could this be dumping syndrome or a sign of malnutrition? Should I get a vitamin infusion or more blood work? Can my metabolism be adjusting wrongly to the surgery? Also, is hair loss common this long after a bariatric op? Please guide me if this is normal or if I should worry.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your symptoms may be linked to dumping syndrome or malnutrition. Dumping syndrome can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, and unstable blood sugar levels following meals. After metabolic surgery, malnutrition is a significant risk, as swift weight loss can result in a lack of vital nutrients.

Hair loss is also frequently observed post-bariatric surgery due to alterations in nutrient absorption and rapid weight loss. It is essential to keep track of your vitamin and mineral levels, and you may need a vitamin infusion or further blood tests to rectify any deficiencies. While your metabolism might be adapting to the surgery, it is vital to consult your healthcare provider for effective management and to prevent complications.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
