Does metabolic surgery regulate hormones and prevent weight gain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have gained a significant amount of weight over the last few years, which my doctor believes may be due to hormonal imbalances. Despite trying diet and exercise, I have been unable to lose weight. My doctor suggested metabolic surgery as an option.

How effective is metabolic surgery for weight gain linked to hormonal issues? Are there any additional risks for patients with hormonal imbalances? Could this surgery help regulate my metabolism or improve my hormonal balance? What are the chances of weight regain after the surgery? Should I try hormone therapy first before considering surgery? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Metabolic surgery is highly effective for weight loss, even in cases linked to hormonal imbalances such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or insulin resistance, as it improves metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and some hormonal dysregulations. However, risks may be higher in individuals with conditions such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) or adrenal disorders (dysfunctions of the adrenal glands, including Cushing’s syndrome (causes excess cortisol, weight gain, and fatigue) or Addison’s disease), requiring careful management. While surgery can aid in restoring hormonal balance, weight regain is possible if dietary modifications, physical activity, and other lifestyle changes are not maintained.

Hormone replacement therapy might be beneficial if an underlying endocrine imbalance, such as estrogen deficiency, testosterone excess, or cortisol dysregulation, is contributing to weight gain. However, if other medical and lifestyle interventions do not achieve the desired results, metabolic surgery remains a strong option for long-term weight management.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
