Can missing birth control pills cause brown discharge?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female, and I have been taking birth control pills for the past few years. My partner and I were using condoms, and my last cycle ended 20 days before. We had sex two times in between the months. I missed taking the birth control pills last week, so I took medicine the next morning and that night.

Then, from the next morning, for the past two days, I have been having a brown discharge and bleeding, but in a minimal amount, and also not experiencing any cramping. I am having my menstrual cycle next week. I was curious about what could be the reason for the discharge. And also, I rarely miss the pills. And this has not happened before.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I have gone through your and understand your concerns. As per your description, these symptoms could be due to hormonal imbalances caused by birth control pills. Once you stop taking the pills, the period returns to normal within the month.

But in some cases, it may take a longer time to resume menses, which depends on how long you are taking the pills and the type of pill you are taking. Since you forgot the pill, and that is why you had this brown discharge, please follow the instructions mentioned below.

  1. Drink plenty of warm water, with a soft diet.
  2. Lifestyle changes are required in your case.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
