Can photon therapy be repeated for melanocytomas of meninges in cervical spine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have multiple melanocytomas of the meninges in the cervical spine. I had a single tumor removed in 14 years back and it has regrown, along with others. The tumor board where I am being treated recommends radiation. Photon therapy would expose my spinal cord to radiation so it cannot be repeated but I was wondering whether proton beam therapy could possibly be repeated if it was necessary down the road, or if it was possible I could have one type now and the other type down the road.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Multiple meningeal melanocytomas are usually benign lesion. Now it looks like they have recurred again. So now it is better to take a biopsy first to confirm the diagnosis pathologically and to rule out any other issue . Since your last surgical removal of melanocytoma, there is a gap of 13 years now. Once biopsy report is available they can plan the management. If technically feasible even surgical removal of these melanocytomas is also a good option. Since you have not attached any reports here, I would not be able to check the size location and appearance of these lesions and give my suggestion. Regarding Photon therapy, It is better to consult a radiation oncologist.
