Is heavy bleeding with clots normal after a medical abortion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

This is an emergency. I underwent a medical abortion at the eight-week stage, and everything was going fine, but suddenly, since yesterday, I have been bleeding very, very heavily. It happens suddenly, and there are large clots as well, and one passes out. I took the medical pills two weeks ago. Please can you help me out?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you are having heavy bleeding with large clots, then probably your abortion was not complete. You should immediately get an ultrasound scan to see if the uterus is empty or not. If the uterus is not empty, then you have to get it resolved by the removal of products of conception using instruments. If you neglect this, it may lead to sepsis and adverse effects on your health.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
