Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Currently the incidence of Marburg virus is increasing.

Is it contagious and dangerous?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Marburg virus is a zoonotic viral febrile disease spreading from African monkeys and fruit bats to humans. First reported around 1967, and of late, recurrence has been seen in some parts of the world. It spreads through animal-human contact, but information relating to human transmission is still evolving.

Diagnostic tests include antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and IgM-capture ELISA and supporting diagnosis using hematology, biochemistry, and serology. It manifests as viral hemorrhagic (causing bleeding) fever after nearly 2 to 21 days of incubation in children and adults. No specific treatment has been identified for human disease.

Preventive measures are also unclear, including cutting animal-human transmission, maintaining hydration, monitoring platelet count, etc.
