I have crooked teeth and broken decayed tooth. Do I need extraction for braces?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have crooked my front teeth, and the tooth behind them was decayed and half-broken sideways. It was touching the crooked teeth in the back, and my teeth under the jaw are somewhat misaligned.

Do I need a tooth extraction for braces?

Kindly assist.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for reaching out! From what you have described, it sounds like your teeth are crowded, a condition called malocclusion. Do not worry, this is quite common, and there are ways to manage it effectively.

Why teeth get crowded:

  1. Smaller jaw or dental arches.

  2. Baby teeth that fall out late or adult teeth that come in late.

  3. Habits like tongue thrusting or nail-biting.

  4. Early growth or developmental issues.

For the next step, get a thorough oral and orthodontic check-up to see how your teeth and bite are aligned.

Treatment options:

  1. Removable braces are good for mild crowding.

  2. Fixed braces are better for more serious alignment issues.

  3. Tooth removal. Sometimes one or two teeth may need to be removed to create space, and this is normal.

  4. Consult for an orthodontic treatment. They will create a plan just for you.

Tips while growing:

  1. Regular dental check-ups, especially in your first 12 years, help prevent problems.

  2. Avoid habits like nail-biting or tongue thrusting.

  3. Keep up with daily oral hygiene to prevent cavities.

With the right care, crowded teeth can usually be corrected, and your smile can become more comfortable and even.

I hope I have answered your query.

Revert in case you have any other doubts.

Thank you.
