What are the preventive strategies to avoid contracting Lyme disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I spend a lot of time outdoors and am concerned about Lyme disease. Can you provide insights into the symptoms and transmission of Lyme disease? Additionally, are there specific preventive measures or precautions I should take to reduce the risk of contracting tick-borne diseases while enjoying outdoor activities?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness. It is a multi-system disease caused by infection with the pathogen called Borrelia burgdorferi, and the resultant body's protective immune response to the infection is transmitted to humans via black-legged ticks (genus Ixodes). The disease-related signs and symptoms include flu-like illness with fever, chills, single or multiple rashes, headache, malaise, skeletal muscle pain, joint pains, and headache. Tender lymph node enlargements (regional or generalized), eye infection including conjunctivitis, heart block caused by inflammation of the heart (carditis), aseptic meningitis, cranial nerve inflammation, especially cranial nerve VII with Bell palsy (palsy but with decreased unilateral function, including the forehead).

In patients with late disease, the typical physical finding is joint inflammation and arthritis.

The tests for diagnosis include blood-ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and western blot test from blood.

Additional tests include

  1. ECG (electrocardiogram).
  2. Joint aspiration in the supposed infected affected joint.
  3. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) aspirate.

The treatment comprises the usage of oral and IV antibiotics including Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, or Cefuroxime axetil, depending on availability and sensitivity of the infection-causing agent. Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
