I have stabbing pain in my right flank and lower abdomen with mild discomfort after urination. Please help.

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am having pain in my right flank and right lower abdomen since yesterday. Pain is stabbing. I feel more pain when I am moving around. I am having mild discomfort and slight pain after urination. Today I am feeling slightly feverish and having chills. Recently a month back, I had pain in the right side of my lower abdomen.

Doctor suggested a USG of the abdomen and pelvis and urine test. Both the reports were normal, and he gave me painkillers. I request you to suggest some medication.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Right flank pain has many different causes like ureteric colic, primarily due to stone in the ureter blocking the kidney, back pain due to compression of the spinal nerve root, and muscular pain.

Firstly your ultrasound and urine test shows that there is no issue with your kidney or ureter (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

Also, stabbing pain is not due to the kidney as kidney pain is grappling colicky pain. In addition, kidney pain does not aggravate with movement, while nerve and muscular pain aggravate upon any physical activity. So this pain is either muscular or nerve pain.

For further workup, you will need an X-ray of the lumbosacral spine with supine and lateral views and a follow-up with an orthopedician or neurosurgeon.

If you have any more queries, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you.
