How to manage low HDL and LDL cholesterol levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 6-foot-tall male, 31 years old, and I weigh 194 pounds. I recently had a lipid profile done, and the report showed my HDL to be 23 mg/dL and my LDL to be 80 mg/dL. I sometimes experience slight left-sided chest pain. I have gained 44 pounds in the last two years, and I do not drink or smoke. What should I do now?

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your lipid profile is good, except for your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which are low. Low LDL is beneficial, so there is no need to worry about that. Since you have gained 44 pounds in the last two years and are experiencing mild chest pain, I suggest you get the following tests done: Free T4 (thyroxine), T3 (triiodothyronine), TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), ECG (electrocardiogram), and TMT (treadmill test). A cardiac problem is unlikely, but to be sure, please complete these tests. In the meantime, I recommend taking one capsule of Pantoprazole and Itopride before breakfast for four weeks. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What should my diet be to increase HDL?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The diet to increase HDL is as follows:

  1. Use olive oil in salads, sauces, and when cooking.
  2. Sprinkle chopped olives in salads and soups.
  3. You can also use peanut and canola oil.
  4. Avoid saturated fats such as ghee, butter, and animal and dairy fats.
  5. Increase your intake of high-fiber fruits like apples, pears, and avocados.
  6. Drink cranberry juice.
  7. Incorporate beans, legumes, whole grain bran, cereals, and brown or wild rice, as well as oats.
  8. Include nuts such as almonds and peanuts.
  9. Eat fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines, as they contain omega-3 fatty acids.
  10. Try to consume soy-based products as well.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is it something serious, or is it curable after some time?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is low. You can try to increase it by walking for 30 minutes daily. Use olive oil for salad dressing and cook with it at low temperatures. Add beans and legumes to your diet. Include apples, pears, and other high-fiber fruits. Eat fatty fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids, such as sardines, salmon, and tuna. Use flaxseed oil. Incorporate almonds, peanuts, avocados, and soy-based products into your diet. Take Rabeprazole and Itopride once daily before breakfast for two months. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent. You may also consider an upper GI endoscopy to rule out GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Thanks and regards.
