Why some vaginal lips are closed while some others are open?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I do not know if this is a dumb question to ask. But I do not have any adult females in my life to ask comfortably. I am a 19-year-old female, and I wondered why other women had open vaginas, so that you could see their vulva and vagina. My outer lips cover my whole vagina and vulva. I have to physically open my outer lips to see my vulva or vagina. Is this normal?

Answered by Dr. J. N. Naidu

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A sitting position may cause an opening of the vagina. Those who are used to sex, women with children, and older women will have somewhat loose vaginas, which can easily open while sitting in some positions. In your case, it appears to be normal, but I cannot be sure without viewing it.
