Is knee swelling after a fall normal if it lasts this long?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I fell a few days back, and my right knee and left ankle are still swollen and very painful. I am currently on Hydrocortisone and other medicines for a brain tumor diagnosed years ago. I am also taking Thyroxine, Desmopressin, Lansoprazole, and painkillers.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It has been almost a week since you injured your right knee and ankle.

Painful swelling of the knee and ankle indicates a ligament sprain or tear. If it is soft tissue injury swelling, it takes about a week for the pain and swelling to subside.

If the painful swelling has not improved, I suggest you consult your specialist doctor, discuss it with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is history of fall.

Investigations to be done

Investigations to be done are X-ray images of the right knee and ankle. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), depending on the doctor's observation.

Treatment plan

For treatment, I suggest that until you arrange an appointment with your doctor, no weight bearing, ice application, or Tubigrip. You can continue OTC (over the counter) analgesics.
