Does over exercising cause knee pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have somehow hurt my knee. It has been hurting for a few weeks. I overdid with exercising. Now it is swollen. What could it be?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It could be grinding of the knee cartilage, causing pain and knee swelling (synovitis).

Instructions for knee pain:

You need to take the following tablets:

  1. Tablet Ibuprofen 400 milligrams twice for ten days after food.
  2. Tablet Rabeprazole 20 milligrams once for ten days before food.
  3. Tablet Shelcal Ct 500 milligrams once for 30 days before food.
  4. Tablet vitamin D (60 K) once daily for ten days, then once a month for 11 months.

Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them. Do not take these tablets if you are a known case of bronchial asthma.

Activities that cause pain should be avoided temporarily. If the knee is swollen or sore, the following positions and activities should be avoided until knee pain and swelling resolve:

  1. Squatting.
  2. Kneeling.
  3. Twisting and pivoting.
  4. Jogging.
  5. Aerobics.
  6. Dancing.
  7. Sport.

You should wear a knee cap to support the knee joint, wear it all day, and you can remove it at night. Apply ice packs twice daily for 15 mins each. You need to get your X-ray of both knee joints in AP (standing) and lateral views.

Do the X-rays and upload them for accurate advice,

Thank you.
