Do knees feel over-extended after a knee injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 18- year-old with a height of 5 feet 4 inches height and a weight of 180 lb. I am not under any medications but I got hurt on my knees at work and the hurt is over-extended. I have had this kind of hurt before and it feels like my knee was giving out but in a wrong way. My knees are always over-extended. Do I need to see a doctor? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I suggest you see a doctor as this can be anything from a meniscal injury to patellar subluxation or chondromalacia patella. So it is better to get it examined by a doctor. Try some home remedies for your pain:

1. Ice packs may be useful for the control of pain and swelling. It can be applied to the knee for 15 to 20 minutes as often as every two to four hours. The swollen knee should be elevated above the level of the heart while icing.

2. Activities that cause pain should be avoided temporarily.

If the knee is swollen or sore, the following positions and activities should be avoided until knee pain and swelling resolve:

1. Squatting.

2. Kneeling.

3. Twisting and pivoting.

4. Jogging.

5. Aerobics or dancing.

6. Playing sports.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
