Do kidney stones of 10 mm size pass out normally?

Hi doctor,

I am a 25 -year -old male. I have been diagnosed with three kidney stones an approximate size of 0.39 inch. Out of three, one of the stones dropped into the bladder and two are on the way. When and how will I be able to pass it out normally? I am taking Alfuzosin and Drotin-M, which help me to urinate well enough. I also take a good enough amount of fluids. Can you please help me out?

I understand your concern. It is a good thing that your stones are passing down. Usually stones less than five millimeters will pass out spontaneously in 95 percent of cases. When this increases to ten millimeters as in your case, the chances of spontaneous clearance reduce to 60 to 70 percent, based on the location. Endoscopic surgery is indicated if; severe pain that is not controlled by any medicine, vomiting that can not be controlled by medicine, high fever, stone not progressing for over two weeks, and stones greater than 0.341 inch in size. Since the stones are moving out, it is best to await spontaneous clearance. Depending on the location, the time to pass the stone will vary. Alfuzosin dyes facilitate stone passage, as does drinking plenty of water.
