How can I treat keratosis pilaris on the arms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 30 years old male. My skin complexion is fair. I have keratosis pilaris on both upper arms. I am using Clindac A (Clindamycin phosphate topical solution) once daily for the last one month as per my local dermatologist's advice. However, there is no improvement. How can I treat keratosis pilaris and remove the small red, bumpy marks from my arms?

Hi,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

Clindac A has not much role in keratosis pilaris according to my opinion. If you have acne, it will help in alleviating it. I suggest you use topical Tretinoin 0.04% over the affected area at night and urea-based moisturizer during the day. It will take a few months to resolve. Consult a specialized doctor, discuss with him or her, and take medicine with consent. Take warm baths and exfoliate with a mild hand using a loofah. Alternatively taking salicylic peel from a dermatologist can speed up recovery. As it is a recurrent condition, make sure you are in maintenance treatment.

Thank you for consulting me.

You can always reach me at icliniq.com.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What do you mean by maintenance treatment? Does it mean that I need to use the medicines again and again? Do I need to take a warm bath during summer too?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read and understand your concern.

You may have to stay under treatment even after complete resolution, maybe not as aggressively as before. One urea based moisturizer at night and exfoliation can be good for management.

Looking forward to your response in order to help you.

Thank you.
