I am a 35-year-old female. My child eats junk food every day. I think that these are ultra-processed foods. What nutrients are present in ultra-processed foods? How do ultra-processed foods affect a child’s general health and cognitive function? What complications can arise from consuming them? How can I control this snacking habit in my child?

Ultra-processed foods often contain high levels of added sugars, excessive amounts of unhealthy fats (trans fats and saturated fats), low-quality proteins, refined carbohydrates, high levels of sodium, and artificial additives (preservatives, colorings, and flavorings). They also have low levels of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Consuming these foods can lead to obesity, early onset diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, digestive issues like constipation, nutrient deficiencies, impaired learning and memory, behavioral issues, and mood disorders. Other complications include dental problems, weakened immune systems, metabolic syndrome, and growth issues.
