What causes pain between the ear and jaw while yawning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing pain between my ear and jaw, especially while eating and yawning. It started four weeks ago, and then it went away on its own, but now it has started again. Could this be TMJ (temporomandibular joint) related?

Please help.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

This pain could result from various reasons, but two common ones are

  1. Wisdom tooth eruption pain: Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 19 and 30. If they are erupting, you may experience pain and swelling behind the last molar. If their position is incorrect, you may also feel pain and swelling in the TMJ region, near the ear, and slightly toward the head and neck. If you can provide me with a picture of your last tooth in the jaws and tell me your age, I can identify the exact reason.
  2. TMJ pain: For TMJ pain, you should apply warm compresses to the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) from outside three to four times a day for two weeks and take some muscle relaxant tablets for a week or two. This should help alleviate the pain. If there is also a clicking sound, you may need to do exercises for it.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
