What could be the cause of intense itching and skin discoloration between thighs and scrotum?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 16-year-old male, and I have noticed the presence of white and red skin between my thighs and scrotum. The condition is also slightly affecting the scrotum itself. I have been experiencing intense itching for the past ten days. So far, I have not used any medication to address this issue. Today, I tried to relieve the itching by applying some coconut oil.

Kindly help. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your query and understand your concern. With your description, you have tinea cruris, which can be confirmed if you provide a review with a picture. Tinea cruris is a fungal infection of the groin. To manage it, you can follow certain general measures. Please do not keep the area wet. Use Clotrimazole powder frequently to keep it dry. Avoid itching and scratching. Change your undergarments regularly and avoid excessive sweating and wet clothes. Do not apply any general or steroid creams like Betnovate (Betamethasone valerate). It is important to continue the medication even after the infection has resolved to eliminate the fungus completely. Check for diabetes and thyroid issues, as they can contribute to recurrent infections despite proper treatment. In terms of treatment, you can apply a 2% Ketoconazole cream (KZ cream) twice daily and take a tablet of Terbinafine 250 mg (Terbinafine hydrochloride) for three weeks after consulting your general practitioner or a nearby dermatologist.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
