Can IBS flare-ups be accompanied by muscle pain, fatigue, and lower back pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My body pain started ten days ago. I also experience fatigue, muscle pain, and lower back pain. I had COVID-19 one and a half months ago. I also have IBS but do not have a fever or other conditions. Why do I have muscle pain and body aches? Are my problems related to IBS flare-ups?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your case history (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). The symptoms you explain are more associated with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. IBS is irritable bowel syndrome. Your problems are not due to COVID-19 as you had it 50 days ago. I suggest you take simple painkillers like Paracetamol (consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent).
