Should irregular periods over six months be a concern?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period has been off for the past six months, meaning my cycle will go from 31 days which is normal, up to 51 days. I did not get a period for two months and then I got one next month. It was fine when it came again a month later and then it came very late the month after, no period last month and now this month I am five days late. Should I be worried? I have never been on birth control or any type of medication.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Irregular periods can occur due to many causes like anemia, hormonal imbalance like PCOD, thyroid disorders, etc. As you are having irregular periods for the past 6 to 7 months, better to consult your gynecologist once and get examined and go for investigations like hemoglobin levels, thyroid profile, ultrasound, etc. If she advises, you may need to undergo FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) levels also. With this full workup, the possible cause of your problem can be identified and treatment can be taken accordingly. Take care.
