What can cause irregular, fast, and skipped heartbeats?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I get irregular heartbeats sometimes, and I feel like my heart has skipped one beat. I felt normal before, but today, while I was at work, my heart started beating really fast for two seconds and was normal after that. I do not take any medication. I am not sure if I should see a cardiologist in person. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern. Most of the time, irregular or fast heartbeats are normal and are of no concern, especially in young persons, but sometimes these are not. I want to ask a few things. Reply to these so that I may guide you further regarding what the management strategy should be. Have you ever felt dizziness, a blackout, or a fainting attack? Is there any family history of a heart attack or sudden death without a reason or due to a heart condition? Do you have the habit of consuming alcohol, smoking, caffeine, or any other addiction?

I suggest the following investigations. Do ECG (electrocardiogram), Holter monitoring for 24 to 48 hours monitoring, thyroid profile, and serum electrolytes. After these tests, consult me or any cardiologist you feel good with. Preventive measures include avoiding alcohol, caffeine, stress, and smoking. Follow up with answers and reports after three days. Hope this has addressed your concern. Regards.
