How long should someone take iron supplements for severe anemia and abnormal uterine lining?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My partner has severe anemia and does not have the lining to carry or conceive a child. She was prescribed iron supplements several months ago, but she was curious how long she would take them before she could conceive a child.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Since how long has she had anemia, and do you have any reports? It is better to have a recent one. The kind or type of anemia also matters because the treatment and management differ according to the type.

If she has severe anemia, she can have a blood product transfusion to have an immediate effect. However, if management and treatment are needed too frequently and recurrently, it is better to have them under the guidance of a physician.

I suggest the following to improve her chances of conceiving.

1. Folic acid regularly, 5 mg daily. However, please consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

2. A strict check on any health issue and need to have recurrent checkups and treatment.

3. Sex in the fertile period of the cycle.

4. A healthy diet with carrots, apple juice, and lots of spinach.

5. Mild exercise or walking daily.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
