How to deal with low iron levels in the blood?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28 years old girl and have problems with iron in my blood. My iron levels are too low. I have taken the medication but this state of low iron is repeated for me every six months until now. Please help me with what to do.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

According to reports, (attachment remove to protect patient's identity) it seems to be iron deficiency anemia like the picture as serum ferritin, iron, HB (hemoglobin), and MVC (mean corpuscular volume) are all low. So for that ferrous sulfate tablets should be taken regularly for at least one to two months and then after correction of hemoglobin again tablet is taken for an extra one month to replenish the store. If the tablet leads to gastritis then syrup can be taken. Try to find out the cause of iron deficiency anemia. Like parasite infection like hookworm, nutritional anemia, cause continuous bleeding. According to to cause further specific treatment is given as causative treatment. Clinical correlation is also needed. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
