What are the symptoms that should be expected after IUD insertion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female, 5 feet 3 inches tall, and weigh around 155 pounds. I had my Mirena IUD inserted 6 months back. I had my period a week after insertion, bled for two weeks, and then nothing. I have not had a period since then. I have experienced some period symptoms on and off since then, but no period. I have taken pregnancy tests, and they have all been negative. I have a history of recent medical conditions, including sharp abdominal pain, bloating, fatigue, the absence of a period, moodiness, and basic period symptoms. I have also taken Depo-Provera for the same complaints without experiencing any issues. Please help me.

Hi,

I am delighted to welcome you at icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

How are you doing? I feel you haven't been well-counseled before the Mirena insertion. Let me provide you with some facts. Mirena is a Levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine device that releases hormones continuously daily for five years. This is the same hormone, Progesterone, which is produced by the ovary every month after ovulation, during the second half of your menstrual cycle. So, all the symptoms you are experiencing will be an exaggeration of the symptoms that occur during this phase of your menstrual cycle. With Mirena, you will not have regular periods, so you do not need to constantly check for pregnancy. When the IUD is in your uterus, a baby will not develop there. This hormone will suppress your natural hormones, leading to the absence of periods until it is removed. You may experience occasional spotting. Progesterone's effects can include depression, mood swings, a bloated feeling, and easy fatigability. Just wait for a few months, and these symptoms should subside on their own. You can also consider taking Evening Primrose pills, 1000 mg once daily, as they can help relieve your symptoms.

I hope I have clarified your concerns. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

Thank you.
