I saw tiny worms in the bathroom after a bath. What are the associated health risks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I took a bath this evening and when I came out, I saw some tiny worms in the bath. I swiped the bottom of the bath using tissue and I saw them moving. I feel very disgusted. What are the health consequences that happen due to this issue?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. According to the statement, you have seen some worms in your bathtub during bathing. You want to know the health-related hazards due to the presence of worms in the bathing water. It is difficult to predict the type of worms present there and what are the health hazards caused due to it. The parasites causing water-related diseases are guinea worms, schistosomiasis, amoebiasis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, entamoeba histolytica, and escherichia coli. Bathing in contaminated water causes certain health problems like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A and E, typhoid, swimmer itch due to small larvae called cercaria. Without identifying the worms, it is difficult to predict the type of health hazards causing it.
