What are the stress management techniques for extreme anger?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need some advice about my wife. She is 57 years of age and has hypertension, but what worries me is her uncontrollable anger. Sometimes she gets so angry she cannot control it, and I can see her blood pressure racing. Is this kind of stress and rage going to affect her heart? I have read that high blood pressure is already a risk for heart disease, and adding this kind of emotional stress cannot be good. Are there any medicines or treatments that can help manage her blood pressure and maybe even her anger? She is on medication for her hypertension, but I am not sure if it is enough given these episodes. What else can we do to help her control her anger and keep her blood pressure in check? Should we be looking into stress management techniques or other lifestyle changes?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Stress and anger outbursts affect the body. Stress is one of the reasons for hypersomnia and diabetes. You should tell her to try to follow the below guidelines to deal with her problem. It will help her.

  1. She should do exercises daily for 30 to 45 minutes, like at least going for a walk. It will divert her anger and reduce stress.
  2. She should do meditation for 20 minutes daily; just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on her normal breathing. Do not stop or force herself to stop her thoughts. It will help her to relax.
  3. She should eat healthy, home-cooked food, and avoid junk food.
  4. She should drink enough water.
  5. She should spend quality time with friends and family daily.
  6. She should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, learning new skills, language, or musical instruments.
  7. She should get enough seven to eight hours of sleep daily.
  8. She must avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.
  9. She needs to start a capsule of Fluoxetine (20 mg) daily in the morning after breakfast. It will reduce anger outbursts.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
