What is the treatment for ingrown hair or razor bumps in the bikini area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been shaving in my bikini area for some time now, and now I have a bunch of ingrown hairs or razor bumps. The area down there is red, has bumps, has open cuts from trying to dig out the ingrown hairs, and you can see the hair barely. It is just like a little dark spot under the skin. How do I get rid of this and get back to smooth, good-looking skin down there?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Let the hair grow out a bit before shaving again. Resist the urge to scratch the area. It might itch, but breaking the bumps with your fingernails can lead to infection and scarring. Try to hold off as much as you can. Look for something that contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid, witch hazel, aloe, or any combination of these ingredients. Apply with a cotton swab. If you suspect you have infected ingrown hairs, try using an antibacterial cream daily. Bacitracin, Neosporin, and Polysporin are all possible topical treatments. Change your razor every time.

I hope this information will help.

Thanks.
