How does an ice bath differ from cryotherapy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just came across a documentary, and I am wondering how far medically these methods hold for common men, like ice baths. Can normal persons sustain this cold exposure every day? Also, how different is cryotherapy from this? Is this of sports injuries and inflammations of anyone can benefit from it. Please advise.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query. I can understand your concern.

I can certainly give you some general information about ice baths and cryotherapy. These practices have gained popularity. Thanks to athletes who have shown incredible resilience to freezing temperatures. Ice baths involve immersing your body in cold water, usually around 50 to 59°Farenhite (10 to 15°C), for a short period, typically 10 to 15 minutes.

Some people believe that regular ice baths can help with exercise recovery, reduce inflammation, and even strengthen the immune system. However, it is important to note that scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited, and we still have much to learn about their potential benefits and risks.

On the other hand, cryotherapy takes cold exposure to the next level. It involves standing in a chamber filled with extremely cold air, usually around -110°C to -140°C, for two to four minutes. This treatment is said to offer similar benefits as ice baths, such as reducing inflammation and aiding in recovery. However, just like with ice baths, scientific evidence is still limited. If you are considering incorporating cold exposure into your daily routine, it is crucial to prioritize safety and feasibility.

Ice baths may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain medical conditions like Raynaud's syndrome or heart problems. When it comes to cryotherapy offered at sports rehabilitation centers, it can be beneficial for individuals dealing with sports injuries and inflammation. However, there is not enough scientific research to prove its effectiveness in slowing down the aging process. The professionals at the center can provide more specific advice on whether cryotherapy is suitable for your needs.

Thank you.
