How can a woman treat hypothyroidism at age 26?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 26 years old and have been suffering from hypothyroid problems and irregular periods for the past three years. I am scared of going to a doctor. I take Eltroxin 50 mcg, but my period problem persists. My periods occur once in 50 to 60 days. And this makes me feel depressed.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Hypothyroidism is one of the common causes of oligomenorrhea (low amount and delayed periods). The tablet Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) 50 mcg is suitable, but the dose may require upgrading. We cannot proceed with different therapy until the thyroid hypofunction is corrected. So, I suggest you to check your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels.

Also, do you have symptoms like constipation, intolerance to cold, slow heartbeats, or oversleeping?

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up with the report and the answers.

Take care.
