How can nocturnal hypertension be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am writing on behalf of my mother, who is currently experiencing severe recurrent nocturnal high blood pressure. She has been relying on anti-hypertensive medications for the past five years, but the situation is worsening day by day. Moreover, she reports experiencing a high pulse rate, which has been confirmed by an ECG. Currently, she takes a combination of Cilnidipine and Metoprolol, along with other supplementary medications in case of an emergency.

Please advise.

HelIo,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Nocturnal hypertension is a complication of primary or secondary hypertension and can lead to cardiovascular issues. In such cases, I typically treat my patients with potassium supplements and advise them to avoid sodium-rich foods. Medications like Losartan, which block angiotensin receptors, are also part of the treatment I recommend. I advise her to see a cardiologist for a thorough evaluation to determine the best management for her situation. I wish her a speedy recovery.

Thanks and regards.
